ISPM-15, Heat Treated, and Kiln Dried Heat Treated Pallets: What You Need to Know

Understanding Compliance and Protection in International Shipping with M7 Pallets

When shipping goods internationally, using the right pallet isn’t just a good practice—it’s a legal requirement. ISPM-15 regulations exist to prevent the spread of pests and diseases across borders, and they directly impact what types of wood pallets can be used in global trade. At M7 Pallets, we supply heat treated (HT) and kiln dried heat treated (KDHT) pallets that are fully compliant with ISPM-15 standards. In this blog, we’ll explain what ISPM-15 is, how HT and KDHT pallets differ, and how to ensure your business is shipping with confidence.

What is ISPM-15?

ISPM-15 stands for International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15. It’s a global regulation established by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) to prevent the international spread of wood-borne pests and diseases. It applies to all solid wood packaging materials, including pallets, crates, dunnage, and boxes, used in international shipping.

Key Requirements of ISPM-15:

  • Wood must be treated to eliminate pests and larvae.
  • Treated wood must bear an official IPPC stamp that shows compliance.
  • Untreated or non-compliant wood packaging can be denied entry, destroyed, or returned at the shipper’s expense.

If your business is involved in export shipping, ISPM-15 compliance is not optional—it’s required.

What Are Heat Treated (HT) Pallets?

Heat treated pallets are made from solid wood that has been heated to a minimum core temperature of 56°C (132.8°F) for at least 30 minutes. This process effectively eliminates pests, mold, and other pathogens.

Benefits of Heat Treated Pallets:

  • ISPM-15 Compliant: Essential for international shipments.
  • Chemical-Free: The heat treatment uses no pesticides or harmful chemicals.
  • Pest Protection: Prevents infestations during overseas transport.
  • Safe for Food & Pharma: Ideal for industries requiring hygienic shipping materials.

M7 Pallets supplies certified HT pallets that are clearly marked with the official IPPC stamp, ensuring your shipments are cleared for customs around the world.

What Are Kiln Dried Heat Treated (KDHT) Pallets?

KDHT pallets go through the same heat treatment required by ISPM-15 but also include an additional kiln-drying process. This step removes excess moisture from the wood, making the pallet lighter, more durable, and mold-resistant.

Advantages of KDHT Pallets:

  • Lower Moisture Content: Reduces the risk of mold and mildew during long-term storage or humid transport.
  • Greater Strength & Stability: Less moisture means stronger, more stable boards.
  • Lighter Weight: Kiln drying results in lighter pallets, which can reduce shipping weight and costs.
  • Better for Long-Distance & High-Humidity Shipping: Ideal for ocean freight or long-haul international logistics.

While both HT and KDHT pallets meet ISPM-15 standards, KDHT offers additional protection, especially in challenging shipping environments.

HT vs. KDHT Pallets: Key Differences Explained

Both heat treated (HT) and kiln dried heat treated (KDHT) pallets meet ISPM-15 compliance standards, making them suitable for international shipping. However, there are some important differences that can impact performance based on your shipping conditions:

  • ISPM-15 Compliance: Both HT and KDHT pallets are fully compliant with international shipping regulations and are stamped with the official IPPC mark.
  • Pest Protection: Each type provides effective protection against pests, making them safe for export and preventing the spread of invasive species.
  • Mold Resistance: HT pallets offer moderate mold resistance, but because they still contain moisture, they can develop mold in humid environments. KDHT pallets, on the other hand, have a much higher resistance to mold due to the kiln drying process, which removes most of the moisture content.
  • Moisture Control: HT pallets do not significantly reduce moisture levels. In contrast, KDHT pallets are kiln dried to reduce moisture content, making them less likely to warp, grow mold, or rot—especially in long-term or overseas shipping.
  • Ideal Use: HT pallets are ideal for general export shipping. KDHT pallets are the better choice for long-term storage, international sea freight, or shipments to humid or tropical climates.

If you're shipping internationally on a regular basis—especially by sea or to tropical regions—KDHT pallets are the superior choice for protecting your products and maintaining supply chain reliability.

Why ISPM-15 Compliance Matters

Shipping with non-compliant pallets can have serious consequences:

  • Delays at Port
  • Fines or Penalties
  • Returned or Destroyed Shipments
  • Damaged Product from Mold or Infestation
